Building your own bocce court can be a rewarding and entertaining job, especially if you’re serious about bocce. For many, including myself, bocce is a recreational game where a court is completely unnecessary. If you’re serious though, you’ll want to build a regulation court so you can play on a playing field that even the pros would use. The official regulation court is 91′ by 13′, level, and consists of oyster flour and sand.
For the walls, there is no regulation requirement of a particular type or size of wood so I recommend using 4×4 pressure treated posts that you can lie on the ground. Remember to anchor them into the ground or they’ll move once you pour in the sand. The 4×4 rectangle will be your frame, now pour in a lot of masonry sand and rake it until it’s even. Then get some oyster shell flour or crushed oyster shell, if you want it to be official, and mix it with some sand to create a top layer.
A properly constructed bocce ball court shouldn’t cost you more than a few hundred dollars and a days worth of work. For a full tutorial along with photos, ibocce.com has a complete writeup.
